Description

This handbook is a practical linguistic training resource designed to help judges and prosecutors develop English (and French) terminology used in EU judicial cooperation in criminal matters. It compiles materials from EJTN courses, combining legal concepts with language exercises to support effective communication in cross-border criminal proceedings.

It focuses on key instruments and mechanisms of EU criminal cooperation—such as mutual legal assistance and mutual recognition—using definitions, real-case examples, and practical exercises to strengthen both legal knowledge and linguistic competence.

After using this handbook, learners should be able to:

  • Understand key concepts of EU judicial cooperation in criminal matters (e.g. mutual recognition, cross-border cooperation)
  • Use specialised legal English/French terminology in criminal law contexts
  • Interpret legal documents and instruments used in EU criminal cooperation
  • Communicate effectively with foreign judicial authorities in criminal cases
  • Apply appropriate terminology in practical cross-border criminal scenarios
