Description

The Handbook on the Language of Data Protection (2019) is a linguistic training resource developed by EJTN to support judges, prosecutors, and court staff in mastering the terminology and concepts of EU data protection law. It is based on training materials used in EJTN courses since 2017 and aligns with the EU data protection reform, particularly the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The handbook focuses on building practical legal language skills in English, enabling judicial professionals to understand and apply key data protection concepts in a cross-border context. It introduces core notions such as personal data, data processing, rights of data subjects, obligations of controllers/processors, and supervisory mechanisms.

It also emphasizes the importance of clear legal communication and terminology in fostering mutual trust and cooperation between judicial authorities across EU Member States.

After using this handbook, learners should be able to:

  • Understand key EU data protection concepts
  • Use specialised legal terminology in English
  • Interpret and discuss GDPR-related provisions
  • Communicate effectively in a cross-border judicial context
  • Recognise roles and responsibilities in data protection frameworks
  • Apply data protection principles in practice
