Description

The seminar will be divided into two parts, one theoretical to increase participants’ knowledge and one practical to favour networking. The first part (day 1) will be focused on increasing knowledge on the three procedural rights directives that are considered most important for lawyers (Directive 2013/48/EU on the right of access to a lawyer in criminal proceedings and in European Arrest Warrant (EAW) proceedings, Directive 2016/343 on the strengthening of certain aspects of the presumption of innocence, and Directive 2016/1919 on legal aid for suspects and accused persons in criminal proceedings and for requested persons in EAW proceedings). This will be delivered through various sessions where top experts will address each of the Directives (and the EAW) as well as deal with comparative law and best practices on the application of the directives and the EAW in various EU Member States.

On the second day, enhanced networking activities will be implemented so that participants can meet colleagues from other EU Member States and participate in a case study.

Benefit for lawyers

Lawyers participating in the seminars will gain significant and relevant knowledge on the 3 procedural rights directives targeted by our training as well as on the European Arrest Warrant, which will have direct and beneficial impact for their daily practice. The training will not be just of a theoretical nature but include specifically practical aspects such as case studies. In other words, the seminar will focus on lawyers’ real needs and on how the training can subsequently be applied by lawyers in real life situations, especially in the courtroom.

The networking opportunities will be very relevant for participants, due to the need for collaboration between lawyers from different Member States in cross-border criminal cases.

Course methodology/highlights:

The seminar will be organised in Bucharest (Romania). It will take place face-to-face, which is the best possible way to ensure two of the main aspects of the seminar: high-level training along with the creation of informal networks between the participants. The seminar will last 1,5 days and there will be participants present from at least 8 EU Member States. The first day will be focused on training on the 3 procedural rights directives and the EAW, and on the second day lawyers will participate in enhanced networking activities.

Please note that only lawyers registered with the following Bars can participate in the training: Cyprus, Paris, Athens, Budapest, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, Polish Bar Council of Attorneys at Law. If you are interested in attending the seminar, please contact your Bar. Lawyers attending the seminar from outside the venue’s jurisdiction may receive funding to cover their travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.

This project is co-funded by the European Union.
