- The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union: Case studies
Description
Since 2009 the Charter of Fundamental Rights (the Charter) has become legally binding and has the same legal value as the EU treaties. Nevertheless, the reality is that practitioners are often unsure whether or not the Charter applies to a given situation. The Charter case studies course is part of a series of free-of-charge e-learning courses on the Charter that aim to provide practical guidance on when and how the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights applies at the national level in an interactive way. This online case study-based training course aims to help legal practitioners assess how the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights is applied in a range of policy areas. Focus is put on the field of application of the Charter, namely the question of whether the Charter is applicable to a concrete case at hand. This is done by examining a set of eight concrete cases as they were decided by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). Eight concrete cases, as decided by the CJEU, are presented together with questions about the applicability of the Charter in each one.
